keeps our skin lubricated so it
does not become dry however over production of sebum can make us look too shiny. By using over the counter acne supplements, topical
products, oily skin pills, and controlling our hormones we can help reduce the amount of oil we have while preventing acne as well.

What Causes Our Face to Become Oily and Where Does it Come From?

An oily complexion be caused for a few reasons and effects people differently. Some of us can have a shiny face caused by hormones, for others it can be hereditary, and sometimes it can be caused due to the over-use of our beauty products.

Our Hormones

Not just teenagers going through puberty undergo hormones fluctuations, it can happen in anyone. An increase in androgens which are the male sex hormones like testosterone produce excess sebum from our sebaceous glands which makes us look shiny. Women are a bit more likely to experience oily skin as their hormones fluctuate more than men due to their menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause.

Damn You, Mom & Dad!

Genetics can play a role in sebum production. If your parents have an over-production of sebum then it is very likely that you will have it as well. For people who genetically have a shiny complexion they usually tend to have larger pores which secrete more sebum.

Beauty Products are Good and Bad

Products that we use to clean our face are usually astringents which shrink our pores and cause less oil to be produced. This seems like a good idea because they dry out our face and body however overuse of these products can actually make us produce MORE sebum therefore getting more greasy.

Where Does Body Oil Occur?

Our “T-Zone” which includes the forehead, chin, and nose is the most oily as those spots have the most sebaceous glands. Other areas of the body that are also affected are the back, neck, and chest. These spots are also where acne occurs the most.

How Does Oil Cause Acne?

Larger pores usually excrete more oil than smaller pores. Excess sebum combines with dead cells to clog pores and cause acne flare-ups. Those with a genetically greasy body are more susceptible to hormones causing acne.

How Do Moisturizers Help Oiliness?

We may not think to moisturize if we are greasy however if we are using products that contain astringents we are actually stripping our skin of it’s natural oil. In order to avoid our skin from producing too much sebum to keep our skin lubricated, using a moisturizer is beneficial.

For oily and acne prone skin we want to look for a moisturizer, gel, or serum that is oil-free and non-comedogenic which means it does not clog pores.

Things to Prevent Oily Skin

Exfoliating

Washing and scrubbing our face too often may actually make our face more shiny as it can make our skin too dry causing our oil glands to over-produce sebum. It is a good idea to only use facial scrubs twice a week in order to control oil production.

Can Soap Cause Acne?

From my experience with using regular soap I have noticed that it irritates my face in that it makes it red, blotchy as well as shiny after washing. The irritants in soap can also strip our natural oils away causing more sebum to be produced which could also cause breakouts.

Although not natural, instead of using regular soap to wash my face and body I use “Cetaphil” face wash and body soap as it is does not clog pores because it is non-comedogenic and is very gentle on the skin. I have never experienced greasiness or any kind of blemish when using this product.

Diet Does Cause Acne and Oil Production?

By switching from unhealthy fats like trans fats which are found in fast food to healthy fats found in avocados, nuts, and coconut oil we can prevent our skin from getting shiny and breaking out.

If we want to prevent and clear our face from feeling greasy we can take natural over the counter herbs and vitamin supplements which can help regulate our hormones and oil production from our sebaceous glands. All natural remedies affect people differently so it is important to understand which remedy is appropriate for your type of face and body. Before use you should consult a doctor to make sure there will be no side effects with any medications or prescriptions you may be taking.
